The controversy that started from the CAF African Cup of Nations that was hosted in Morocco made many believe FIFA were backing Morocco to win the AFCON but they have proved not just naysayers wrong but the entire world.
Morocco started their FWC26 journey against Brazil in a game that shook the football world. Many believed Brazil was going to pick three (3) easy points against Morocco but it turned into something else. Morocco held Brazil to a 1-1 draw before beating Scotland by a lone goal to book an automatic qualification to the round of 32.
Although, Morocco had already qualified to the round of 32, they did not hold back when they played against Haiti in the last game of the group stages. Morocco beat Haiti by 4-2, sharing the same points with Brazil who led the group with seven (7) points.
The round of 32 was going to be another test for Morocco as they had to face the Netherlands. The game was intense, and tactical but Morocco were able to hold the Netherlands through the entirety of the game. Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72′ and Diop equalised for Morocco in the 90+1′ before heading into extra time.
They managed the game through to penalties and won by 3-2. Morocco were now slatted to meet co-hosts Canada in the round of sixteen (16) and made sure to prove everyone wrong.
Canada were without their talisman Alphonso Davies but started the game with lots of promise. The centre forwards of Canada were not clinical enough and they got punished eventually.
In the 22′, Ismael Saibari was pulled off for Soufiane Rahimi due to injury. The first half ended in a stalemate but the return to action had lots of events to unfold. Ounahi started the victory journey after Achraf Hakimi from a free-kick placed a low pass which which Ounahi smashed into the right bottom post to give Morocco the first goal.
The game got more interesting as Ounahi and Morocco got their second goal in the 82′. The dugout area of Canada looked dejected as the coach Jesse Marsch looked out of ideas. Alphonso Davies started warming up but did not get any minutes in the game before substitute Rahimi made it 0-3 in the 90+8′ to seal an emphatic victory for Morocco.
The African reps will be facing France in the quarter finals with hopes of making history.
