The Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars of Ghana shocked many after their opener against Panama and the cool they maintained amidst the issues that was surrounding Thomas Teye Partey’s travel to Canada with the team.
For a long time, citizens rallied behind the team with a different spirit and the introduction of Portuguese manager, Carlos Queiroz added more sauce to it.
Although the call-ups draw many criticisms, many quickly forgot after Ghana picked a loan goal victory against Panama in their late winner. Abdul Baba Rahman, Kwesi Sibo, Elisha Owusu and Prince Adu Kwabena were among the names many were not expecting to see in the squad but settled for it anyways.
The talk gradually engulfed around the Ghana vs England game which many believed will be the hallmark of the entire tournament and it lived up to expectations. The England national teams threw everything at the Black Stars of Ghana but their resilience saw them picking a vital point which saw them qualify to the round of sixteen (16) even before playing their last match against Croatia.
It was a shocker to many, others believed the Black Stars were back to the old glory whiles many believed it was just a fluke. They had kept a clean sheet for their first two games but conceded twice against Croatia to face off against Colombia in the round of sixteen (16).
The supporters were stranded after the teams progress as the Sports Ministry’s promise to allocate them tickets only covered the group stages. The team after finishing third (3rd) in Group L escaped Portugal to face Colombia which many believed to be an easy side.
The response from supporters in Ghana and abroad spoke meaning into the current surge in support for a team they have criticised for not qualifying for the AFCON. Benjamin Asare, the Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper who was ranked the sixth (6th) best goalkeeper in the FWC26 was sidelined by coach Carlos Queiroz for Lawrence Ati-Zigi who recovered from a groin injury he picked in the opening game.
Many started to question why Carlos Queiroz featuring Jordan Ayew while changing his winning team. The start of the game looked promising for Ghana as they showcased some urgency in the first minute after which, Colombia took charge of the game.
Jhon Córdoba had to substituted early in the game after picking an injury in the 8′ for Luis Suárez and five (5) minutes later, Ghanaian dependable right back (RB) Marvin Senaya had to be subbed after his decisive tackle on Luis Díaz.
Alidu Seidu was given his opportunity to showcase what he had but his first couple of minutes were disastrous. His positioning and poor communication with Caleb Yirenkyi saw Jhon Arias moving through their opened space to put Columbia in the lead.
It was almost like Ghana were the team in the lead, the sat back in a defensive block loosing possession sloppily to the Colombians in both halves creating no chance. Team Ghana were limited in whatever they wanted to do on the field as time slipped right under their feet.
Many started to chant for Jordan to be taken off as they believed once he is off the field the team becomes better but nothing of that sort happened. Colombia played a tactically discipline game while Ghana sat back and watched they utilise their pace against Alidu Seidu who looked out of position almost throughout the game.
The game many believed was going to be one of Ghana’s easiest, turned out to be the costly game that sent them packing. Ghana’s exit leaved Morocco and Egypt at the other African countries to still keep the hope alive in the FWC26.
