Manchester City became the second club to be defeated on Tuesday night UCL action after Newcastle in their 2-0 defeat to Bayern 04 Leverkusen at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City with their firepower in front of goal saw nothing short of a win against German counterparts Leverkusen until the start of the match.
Pep Guardiola who is still recovering from a shock season relived the same on the touchlines as he watched his side concede two goals without a response.
Manchester City went into the match unbeaten in the UCL while Leverkusen have been struggling to fine their feet. City started on the front foot almost snatching the lead in the 4’ after Nathan Ake’a effort was pushed over for a corner kick by Mark Flekken.
While Man City were piling all the pressure on Leverkusen, a break in the 22’ minute proved to be decisive as Grimaldo, the skipper of Bayern 04 Leverkusen with his left foot blasted one into the bottom corner for the opener.
Manchester City started moving with urgency which almost clinched them an equaliser but Tijani’s shot was saved by Mark Flekken who was ready for action.
Pep threw in Foden, Doku and O’Reilly only to concede a second goal in the 54’ with a header from Patrik Schick. Nathan Ake who was tracking him could not stop Schick whose aerial attack was superb.
Erling Haaland and Ryan Cherki got their turns on the pitch as Haaland was found in a one-on-one situation with Flekken who maintained his composure to dispossess Haaland to neutralise the attack.
In the 84’ Cherki from the free kick right outside the box almost curled one into but Flekken was awake to his shot keep in his side at bay with a 2-0 advantage.
Manchester City who could have gone second or third on the UCL table now side 6th behind Chelsea with ten (10) points after five (5) games.
