Fc Barcelona continue their pursuit for a UEFA Champions League trophy after years and their journey to clinching one is already bumpy.
Fc Barcelona got saved by the bell in the final seconds of their UCL match against Club Brugge all thanks to Anthony Taylor and a timely VAR decision to keep the score at parity.
Many would have tipped Fc Barcelona to easily sail past Club Brugge but the Belgian side came in with their own plan and executed it to perfection.
Club Brugge started it early taking the lead in the 6’ after Carlos Forbs placed a low cross into the Fc Barca goal area from a counterattack, Nicolo Tresoldi who was sprinting with Forbs and the Fc Barca defence slides it past Szczęsny for the opener.
Fc Barcelona responded positively in similar fashion two minutes after they conceded. Fermin López also took to his heels with the broke after a counterattack placing a diagonal pass to Ferran Torres who equalised for FC Barca in the 8’.
The game was very open as both sides went at each other. Carlos Forbs who assisted his sides first goal had his own chance in the 17’. It was another counterattack situation and after two passes, the ball was already with Forbs. Forbs with lots of space positioned himself well before placing the ball nicely into the net for the lead.
Club Brugge went into the break with a 2-1 lead over favourites Fc Barcelona but had lots of work to do.
The second half was filled with drama, beauty and controversy. Lamine Yamal whose trash talk before the El Classico backfired scored a classic ‘Messi-like’ goal after dazzling past a couple of Club Brugge defenders before getting the equaliser for Fc Barcelona in the 61’.
Club Brugge responded yet again within two minutes and it was no other than Carlos Forbs who was having a wonderful night. Hansi Flick kept his high-line tactics which hadn’t worked for him all night due to the pace of the opposition. Forbs after a half pitch dash made it look too easy after lifting the ball over Szczęsny to give Club Brugge a 3-2 lead in the 63’.
Forbs almost secured a penalty kick in the 74’ after been tripped in the Fc Barca box, Anthony Taylor initially pointed to the spot but after consulting VAR, he rescinded his decision. It was almost like the same incident in the El Classico when Yamal tripped Vini Junior.
Yamal Lamine in his quest to find his second forced an own goal from Tzolis in the 77’ after his cross was headed into the Club Brugge net. It was now 3-3 with time running down.
The controversy sure lived up to expectations as it occurred in the 90’. Szczęsny had the ball in his box and tried to dummy Romeo Vermant but his skill was so poor he lost the ball leaving Vermant with an empty goal. The Fc Barca goalkeeper did not protest because he knew he messed up, the lineman had the flags down but VAR spotted foul play reversing Romeo Vermant’s winner.
The scoreline stayed 3-3 as Club Brugge and Fc Barcelona played an additional nine (9) minutes before Anthony Taylor brought the game to an end.
