The inconsistency of Enzo Maresca and his team continues after suffering a preventable home defeat to Sunderland in the English Premier League.
Chelsea Fc returned from a successful European game after beating Ajax Amsterdam by 5-1 making fans believe they were going to have it easy against Sunderland but that is where Chelsea Surprised everyone.
Enzo Maresca has been gambling a lot with his player selection and substitutions and that has cost his dearly over series of games.
Granacho got to start against Sunderland at the Bridge while’s Estêvão and Gittens who terrorised the Ajax team watched from the bench.
Chelsea Fc looked likely to pick a home win after Granacho’s 4’ opener. The Blues kept pushing for more but got caught in their tracks in the 22’ after a header Traoré found Wilson Isidor unmarked in front of Robert Sanchez directing the ball into the net for an equaliser.
Chelsea Fc started pushing forward with the aim of finding another but Granacho’s sliding effort was saved by Robin Roefs. Trevoh Chalobah equally launched one from yards out which called for another brilliant save.
While Chelsea Fc were slightly ahead in possession and opportunities created, Enzo Maresca’s substitution let him down once again.
The defensive pair of Chalobah and Tosin has always been a problem for Chelsea yet Maresca decided to risk it by taking off Acheampong who has gradually improved in his position.
The game was 1-1 with seconds on the clock to go, Chelsea’s attack quickly turned into defence after Geertruida’s long range clearance found his teammate Brian Brobbey who held on to the ball inside the Chelsea box.
Chelsea having a 2-on-1 advantage meant ease in dealing with the threat but Brobbey proved to fans why Tosin and Chalobah are still not on that level. With Tosin just standing and watching, Brobbey held on to the ball for eight (8) seconds giving his teammates enough time to reach the Chelsea box.
Brobbey who was still in control of the situation now released the ball to Chemsdine Talbi whose low shot misplaced Robert Sanchez for a Sunderland winner.
Chelsea now face Wolves and Tottenham before the international break. A defeat to Wolves would mean an exit from the Carabao cup while’s a defeat to Spurs would mean dropping further on the EPL table.
Although the management have backed Maresca, it will be difficult for him should he go down this path.
