Olympique Marseille had everything going their way as their paid a visit to the Estadio Jose Alvalade for the UCL tie against Sporting CP.
Marseille came into the tie with a record of four (4) wins hoping they could add a fifth against the Portuguese side but their great start to the game eventually turned into a time of reflection.
Trincaao also got the lead for Sporting CP from a free kick but his effort inched over the bar. Marseille got their own share of action when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drove one from the centre circle into the opposition goal area.
Auba saw Igor Paixão in space and placed one diagonally into his path, Igor positioned himself well and curled it into the right corner for a Marseille opener in the 14’.
Marseille manager Zerbi got booked in the 37’ and two minutes later, former Chelsea left back Emerson got his share of the booking.
As the seconds run the clock down for first half, Marseille almost got a chance to double their lead after a penalty shout was overturned by VAR. Emerson who was in the mix of the penalty controversy was judged to have dived and received his second yellow card.
It was Sporting CP’s time to utilise their home and man advantage against Marseille. Both managers threw in a couple of fresh legs but Sporting’s sub paid off.
Geny Catamo who came on in the 64’ got the equaliser for Sporting CP in the 69’, his equaliser was subjected to a VAR check for a possible offside but checked out fine.
Allison Santos who came on as a sub in the 80’ for Sporting CP received the ball on the left flanks and decided to take in the Marseille defenders. While the players were waiting for him to cut back, Santo released a shot that took a wicked deflection into the net in the 89’.
Sporting CP had overturned their lone goal deficit to a 2-1 lead which won them the tie.
