The club world champions proved yet again why some respect needs to be attached to their name after fielding three teenagers in Estêvão Willian (18), Marc Guiu (19) and Tyrique George (19) in a UEFA Champions League match against four times Europea champions Ajax.
Enzo Maresca made a bold statement with his selection having kept Reece James, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez and other names on the bench.
While many thought is was going to be a long night for Chelsea Fc, they actually made it look so easy after taking the academy lads through their own school.
Ajax has been known to be one of the best teams when it comes to grooming young talents but Chelsea Fc have not been worse off in the same regards.
Chelsea were in for a good game after Ajax were reduced to ten (10) men in the first quarter of the hour following Kenneth Taylor’s tackle on Buonanotte, an initial yellow card was overturned after the centre referee consulted VAR to send Taylor off.
Marc Guiu was recalled to the Chelsea Fc squad after Liam Delap’s injury and he has been keeping the position United well. Guiu gave Chelsea Fc the opener 18’ into the game for his first UCL goal before Caicedo who has recently unlocked another his shooting range ability added the second with a spectacular shot in the 27’.
Chelsea Fc although dictating the pace of play looked shaky in defence and almost gave it aways after Tosin’s attempted clearance in the 32’ saw him tripping Raul Moro. Chelsea conceded a penalty and Weghorst whose shot was almost saved by Jörgensen pulled one back for Ajax in the 33’.
Enzo Fernandez who was the skipper for the night got his share of the action as Weghorst committed a clear foul on him in the area to be awarded a penalty. Fernandez extended Chelsea’s lead from the spot kick as his effort was almost saved by Remko Pasveer.
With minutes to end the first half, Chelsea wonderkid Estêvão Willian was awarded a penalty after he was tripped by Youri Baas. Enzo Fernandez handed the ball over to Estêvão who left footed effort was almost denied by Pasveer but managed to squeeze it in for Chelsea’s fourth goal.
The game eventually turned to a game for the teens as Tyrique George after the half added Chelsea’s fifth in the 48’ after coming on for Marc Guiu. It was now 5-1 at the Stamford Bridge and the fun began.
Gittens and Estêvão made life very difficult for the Ajax defence with skill and pace with Estêvão knocking on goal with lots of chances. The fans were in awe of his performance and continued to cheer him on. With many expecting him to win the POTM award, it went to his teammates Jamie Gittens who was equally impressive on the day.
