Chelsea Fc faced their former manager Jose Mourinho who has on countless times professed his undying love for the Blues in their UCL campaign.

Jose Mourinho after being fired from Fenerbahce for not qualifying the club for UCL action got a job at Benfica who were already playing in the competition. With both teams looking for their first UCL victory, the greater pressure was on Chelsea who have been poor in their domestic games.

Chelsea Fc coming into this tie we’re going to lose the services of some key players due to booking and that was already a headache for Enzo Maresca.

The electrifying game that was promised turned into a game of chess where both sides played with extra caution. Mourinho’s game plan was to sit back and catch Chelsea on the break but Maresca dropped Malo Gusto for Reece James when he saw the loop hole widening.

The only goal of the game came in the 18’ when a Granacho cross was tapped in by Richard Rios to give Chelsea the lead. Play resumed to the chess board with Chelsea keen to protect their lone goal lead.

The hosts understood the job better as they held on to possession and made a move for it when it mattered. The surprise of the game was the introduction of Facundo Buonanotte who changed the game in his own way.

While’s Jose Mourinho was finding means of pushing his side to find an equaliser, Chelsea who have been reduced by a man in their last two games made it three red card bookings against Benfica.

Jose Mourinho was a goal down and stepped onto the pitch to be booked and minutes after, a unlikely player for Chelsea Fc got booked and sent off.

João Pedro who received his first booking in the 62’ minute got his second in the 90+6’ in a needless high foot challenge.

Chelsea Fc faces Liverpool Fc next in the English Premier League for another cracker on the 4th October 2025.
