The current English Premier League champions Liverpool Fc will be going into their next EPL fixture without the services of one of their attacking hitmen after picking a needless second booking to be sent off in their EFL match against Southampton .
The two premiership sides faced off in the EFL cup and the drama at Anfield left many of the Liverpool players stunned.
Liverpool hosted Southampton at Anfield for their EFL Cup match and the same has cost them one of their key players who has been netting since joining the club this summer.
Liverpool Fc as the current EPL champions have posed some form of dominance on many teams but Southampton wasn’t taking than from them.
Isak had a couple of great opportunities to open the scoring but his efforts were matched with some brilliant saves. Southampton had their own share after Adam Armstrong’s effort his the woodwork only for Léo Scienza to head it wide.
While Liverpool Fc struggled to find an early opening, they still managed to take the lead after Chiesa put on through for Alexander Isak who made use of the opportunity in the 43’.
Liverpool held on to their 1-0 lead heading into the break and continued to hold on till the 75’ when Southampton found an opportunity to break even.
Shea Charles found himself in a very good position after a Saints cross was not handled properly by the Liverpool defence. The attempted clearance fell to Joshua Quarshie’s feet as he lifted it to his teammate who was in front of the Liverpool goal. Charles looked up and found his spot before slotting the ball into the net for a Southampton equaliser.
While Liverpool were looking for a winner, a log pass from the Liverpool half found Chiesa in an onside position who laid a pass to Ekitike for a tap-in. It was the second assist for Chiesa on the night and a 2-1 lead for Liverpool.
Ekitike who had received a booking in the 53’ while celebrating his goal took off his shirt adamant of the consequence but there an then, teammate Frimpong who realised the situation rather too late was seen asking him why he took off his shirt knowing he is already on a yellow card.
Centre referee Thomas Bramall did not wait for Ekitike to finish dressing up before handing him his second booking of the night.
Ekitike now misses their EPL game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
