Jose Mourinho’s first test as Benfica manager was against Rio Ave in the Primeira Liga but his side gave what would have been a perfect start away in the dying minutes of the game.
Jose Mourinho joined the Portuguese side after been sacked by Turkish giants Fenerbahce after claims of racial comments which still remains under investigations.
The ‘Special one’ who is trying to find or build his own system with the Benfica team had to dig deep as his side game their win out within a whisker.
Benfica had the chance to take the lead in the 60’ but António Silva’s opener was ruled out as there was a foul committed leading to the goal.
The hosts, Benfica finally got the opener in the 86’ after Georgiy Sudakov was set up by Dodi Lukébakio. The former Mourinho would have made it through to the end with a goal up but his team let their guards down and got punished.
With six (6) minutes added-on, all Benfica had to do was manage their okay but their slip-up in defence cost them. Andre took his chance in the 90+1’ to draw level for Rio Ave while Mourinho panted with frustration on the touch line.
Although his side did not win, Jose Mourinho managed to secure a point at home against Rio Ave and look to build on their next game against Gil Vicente before travelling to England to face his former club Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League match.
