Centre referee Wilmer Alexander Roldan Perez didn’t come to play when he officiated the Ecuador vs Argentina world cup qualifier.

The South American sides have been known for their beautiful yet aggressive style of play and referees needed to be alert at all times.

Argentina who have already booked their world cup slot came into their match with a full set except for Lionel Messi whose emotional wave during their previous matche sparked retirement rumours.

Mr. Perez did not shy away from stamping his authority on the pitch as he flashed seven (7) yellow cards and two (2) red cards.

Argentina had no shot on target against Ecuador although they had the majority of possession.

Before the 27’, there had been three bookings. Lautaro Martinez (8’), Moisés Caicedo (16’) and Gonzalo Plata (26’).

Nicolás Otamendi was the first to get sent off with a straight red card on the 31’.

It looked as though Ecuador were going to utilise their man advantage after they scored from a penalty kick in the added time of the first half.

Chelsea Fc dynamic midfielder Caicedo received a second booking in the 50’ which balanced the previous man-advantage.

The hosts managed to hold off the pressure from a relaxed Argentina before Colombian referee Perez brought the game to a close.

Ecuador move to second place with 29 points with Colombia behind them on 28 points.

NB: Ecuador and Colombia have both qualified for the World Cup final.
