Boxing has been one of the sporting disciplines in Ghana that has projected the name of Ghana to the world following the exploits of the likes of Prof. Azumah Nelson, Ike ‘Bazuka’ Quartey, Joshua Clottey, Joseph Agbeko, Richard Commey, Isaac Dogboe, D.K Poison and many others.

The current crop of boxers have made it difficult for some promoters to invest in boxing as many acclaimed best boxers chicken out of fights that investors seem will yield some good returns.

In recent times, boxing matchmaker and promoter, Mubarak Yusif Nanor express his frustration after sharing his view on how many boxers make promoters and matchmakers go through turmoil trying to make a match only for them to back out in the latter hours.

In our previous interview, Nanor explained that it was not easy talking to the management members of the boxers and also ensuring the venue is secure for a fight that fans are interested in, the only problem is that these same management will keep working with you until a day or some hrs to the fight to tell you their boxer can’t fight.

This issue of who wins Ghana the next world title has made many Ghanaian boxers take up names such as the best in Ghana, ‘Mr. levels’, Undefeated etc. These same boxers bragging about their names chicken out of any fighter who calls them out using laughable excuses.

Mr. Mohammed Amin Lamptey, the Director of Communication at the Ghana Boxing Authority in an interview with ‘Asempa’ revealed the same stance held by many promoters and matchmakers.

“Promoting a fight is very expensive. This is what the GBA is taking for granted, the main challenge facing boxing in Ghana is the lack of proper support and community involvement. Many of these young boxers live in difficult environments and need to be placed in training camps to keep them focused and away from negative peer pressure. As a nation, we must have a clear plan for them.

Ghanaian boxers are the best, naturally gifted and feared across Africa. The only setback is the lack of support, fixed fights are one of the major red flags in Ghana boxing , as they undermine the quality and integrity of the sport.” exclaimed Mr. Lamptey

The Minister’s seven member committee investigating the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju didn’t invite me, despite me being the ring announcer and close to the scene. Those invited had no direct connection, he added.

This leaves many in awe as those who could have helped get accurate information were sidelined. Ghana boxing is in decline and Joshua Clottey among other former world title boxers have said same, boxing in Ghana needs to be redefined and placed back to its former glory
