The TotalEnergies CAF Champions league final between Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Pyramids Fc of Egypts was one final that gained lots of traction with both teams and come key players promising to go all out to ensure victory for their respective clubs.

Football this season across the world has recorded series of records that will remain in the history books. Paris Saint-Germain won their first ever UEFA Champions league trophy against Internationale Milan with another record scoreline of 5-0, Chelsea Fc won the UEFA Conference league title to become the first club in history to win all UEFA trophies ever heard of, i.e. UEFA Champions league x2, UEFA Europa league x1, UEFA Super cup x1, UEFA Conference cup x1. Bologna won the Coppa Itallia after 51years of waiting, Tottenham Hotspurs won the UEFA Europa league after a 17years wait for a major trophy, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, among other records.

What made the matchup interesting is that, Pyramids Fc was established on 2008 and gained recognition in recent years. The Cairo based club won the Egypt Cup title earlier in the season and set their eyes on the continental trophy.

Pyramids Fc went to South Africa and held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 scoreline and promised to win the TotalEnergies Champions league title in their return fixture in Cairo following the impressive performance away from home.

There was planning, there was training, and there was determination to ensure their name is added to the group of elites on the continent.

Mamelodi Sundowns were the favourites of many as they are the traditional club that many have followed but Pyramids Fc kept their promise of shocking the world after the end of proceedings.

The much anticipated continental battle kicked off in Cairo between Pyramids Fc and Mamelodi Sundowns and the hosts who were on the verge of rewriting history took the bull by it horns. They showcased class, calm and perfection in every section of the pitch.

Pyramids began with purpose in front of a passionate home crowd, taking the lead in the 23rd minute through their prolific striker Fiston Mayele, who rifled a low shot into the far corner after a clever move on the right side.

The goal marked his ninth in the competition and confirmed his status as one of the key figures in Pyramids’ historic run.

The home side doubled their lead shortly after the restart when defender Ahmed Samy rose highest to head home from a Mohamed Chibi cross in the 56th minute, sending the Cairo crowd into a frenzy.

It was out of the hands of Sundowns who were now chasing the game and open to silly mistakes. Pyramids Fc had lots of pace to burn and Sundowns were weary as they could be caught on the break.

The persistence of Sundowns paid off in the 75th minute when Iqraam Rayners drew one back from close range.

Tension began to build heading into the late minutes of the match as Mamelodi Sundowns started throwing everything they had at Pyramids whose resilience could not be broken.

The match ended with Pyramids Fc winning by 2-1 on the day and 3-2 on aggregate.

The promise to Pyramids Fc fans had been fulfilled, the target of the players to rewrote history had been completed. Pyramids Fc showed no compassion to their seniors.

The crowd roared in excitement behind their team while they lifted their maiden TotalEnergies CAF Champions league trophy.
