Spaniard takes charge at the Cairo giants after three successful seasons with Orlando Pirates.

  • Jose Riveiro handed the Al Ahly reins less than a month out from the Club World Cup
  • 49-year-old has had stints in Spain, Finland and South Africa
  • Red Eagles face SE Palmeiras, FC Porto and Inter Miami C.F. in Group A

With less than a month to go until Al Ahly have the honour of opening the FIFA Club World Cup™, when they face Inter Miami C.F., they finally have a permanent head coach in place. Former long-serving defender Emad Al Nahhas had been operating in a caretaker capacity following the decision to part ways with former coach Marcel Koller in late April. Jose Riveiro has now been confirmed as the man to take the Red Eagles into the global showpiece.

Riveiro arrives in Cairo off the back of three successful seasons in South Africa, where he led Orlando Pirates to a pair of Nedbank Cup triumphs and a trio of MTN8 titles.

The 49-year-old from Vigo had previously spent more than half a decade in Finland, holding various roles at some of the nation’s leading club sides.

He then made the switch to Soweto where he led the Pirates to back-to-back league runners-up finishes against fellow Club World Cup outfit Mamelodi Sundowns.

Nicknamed the Professor, Riveiro is the second Spanish coach to have overseen Al Ahly, after former Al Ain and Wydad AC boss Juan Carlos Garrido had a brief stint in charge from 2014-2015.
