Ghana national team coach, Mr. Otto Addo has finally named his squad for the Unity games that will be hosted in the United Kingdom and many have raised concerns about the exclusion of some players in the local league who have proven to be the best so far in the season under review.
Ghana national team selection has always been a pressure backed selection and this to many people is the reason why it can take the coach the whole year to produce his list.
Its been evident player selection is very difficult and some historic clubs feel entitled to having their players represent the national team irrespective of their current form.
Benjamin Asare got the nord to represent the senior nations team during the FIFA world cup qualifier and many teams in the local league protested although he has been the best goal keeper in the Ghana premier league. Kumasi Asante Kotoko who have been fierce rivals of Accra Hearts of Oak have always battled the case where their players haven’t gained national team call-ups where a Phobian was to represent.
This tension has not yet being addressed and has continually influenced player selection and the effect has always been the same. Players warming the benches or not being able to prove themselves.
Coach Otto Addo’s list included;
| Lawrence Ati-Zigi | St. Gallen |
| Benjamin Asare | Accra Hearts of Oak |
| Joseph Tetteh Anang | St. Patrick’s Athletic |
| Gideon Mensah | Auxerre |
| Ebenezer Annan | Red Star Belgrade |
| Mohammed Salisu | AS Monaco |
| Stephan Ambrosius | St. Gallen |
| AAron Essel | North Texas SC |
| Razak Simpson | Nations Fc |
| mamudu Kamaradini | Medeama Sc |
| Caleb Yirenkyi | Fc Nordsjælland |
| Abdul Salis Samed | Sunderland |
| Ibrahim Sulemana | Atalanta Bergamo |
| Abu Francis | Cercle Brugge |
| Majeed Ashimeru | Anderlecht |
| Abdul Aziz Issah | Barcelona Atletic |
| Lawrence Agyekum | Cercle Brugge |
| Christopher Baah Bonsu | Genk |
| Jordan Ayew | Leicester City |
| Thomas Asante | Coventry City |
| Kwame Opoku | Asante Kotoko |
| Mohammed Gadafi Fuseini | Union Saint-Gilloise |
This list have got many wondering whether the call-ups is by merit or performance since a couple of names in there are questionable.
Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona Atletic’s call-up is the first of many that many have questioned but seem not to be getting answers. Aziz since joining Barcelona Atletic has played less that 30mins of football, whiles his talent might be unquestionable, what impact has he made in football to deserve the national team call-up? Many claimed the name Barcelona is enough to give him the push but what impact has he made?
Kwame Opoku of Kumasi Asante Kotoko is another player who many assume was called because of pressure from the local giants and it seems to be true. Kwame Opoku’s stats in the premier league although impressive is not the leading goal scorer not the best striker which makes it a bit confusing. His selection as a striker would suggest his impact in the local league and how many goals and assists he has made, Stephen Amankona of Berekum Chelsea who won NASCO player of the month in March currently has 13 goals while called kwame Opoku has 9 goals.
It this a case of pressure to allocate a slot to the Porcupine player of he merited the space.
Ghana plays in the four nation Unity Cup including Jamaica, Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago, and many hope the best deserving players are given the opportunity to represent.
