The Ghana premier league has boasted of its own El Classico better known in the local scene as the ‘Super Clash’ and has always been between the Continental Club Master, Accra Hearts of Oak and Krobea Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The rivalry between these two teams was so intense that on May 9th 2011 at the Accra Sports Stadium a game between these two sides caused many supporters to lose their lives after a misunderstanding.
These teams are two of the biggest names you can arguably mention in the Ghana premier league even in their worst form and their meeting always was a special one to their respective supporters.
Sometimes its just for the bragging rights and it has stayed same till today when Accra Hearts of Oak hosted Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium for a Ghana Premier league game.
The game that lost major publicity and media coverage did not live to expectation both to their managers and supporters.
Predictions started flying in, pandits started making analysis while media personalities did as much as they could to draw attention of the crowd but the main business was left for the two teams who had trained for this moment.
The game kicked off at the Accra Sports Stadium and Karim Zito the new manager that took charge after Dr. Ogum had one job and that was to ensure Kotoko does not lose.
Karim Zito as a coach has played against Accra Hearts of Oak seven (7) times and hasn’t lost a single game against the Phobians. This is his record to protect and a bragging right to maintain on the other side.
The started with a stadium almost empty, the publicity and urge to drive supporters to the stadium had failed. Now the teams had to prove a point. There was nothing special in the early minutes of the game although the hosts started pressing a little with little urgency in the attack. The tides kept changing for both teams in the first half with Accra Hearts of Oak maintaining majority of possession.
Fans were expecting something magical which was not happening, shouts from fans urging attackers to shoot the ball from the distance kept intensifying but none of these happened.
It was up to the players who rather held on to the ball than venture into any goal scoring opportunities.
The visitors, Kumasi Asante Kotoko had the best of opportunities with one shout for a penalty and the other after Justice Blay got mixed up in a controversial situation after winning a lose ball from the defensive line of the Phobian. The centre referee whistled for a free-kick which many have captured and are analysing.
The game the was supposed to be a super clash turned to be a super bash, nothing extraordinary. Fans had to enjoy the company of their friends in the stadium as their teams failed to deliver.
Hearts of Oak in the middle of controversy held 52% possession against 48% to Kotoko but none of this was translated into goals. The most intense game on the GFA and GPL calender ended another draw.
Fans of both sides have been blaming the centre referee for not awarding some decisions to their respective teams believing it would have changed the outcome of the game.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko after their league tie place 4th on the Ghana premier league log while Accra Hearts of Oak sit 7th.
