It was a fight of survival, a fight of faith and one to prove a point, Eubank Snr. and Benn Snr. who were at ring side to support their children from their corners surely realised things aren’t as they left boxing.
The hype that have lived to expectation in boxing this 21st century will always remember. The fight that started with both fighters flying in with punches from the first round continued through till the last.
It was a night of fury as Connor Benn made Eubank Jnr. dig deep while punches flew from all angles. Chris in the early rounds started to use his jabs to keep Benn away and scored some points until Benn’s corner changed their tactics, he started getting close to him and made it difficult for Chris to utilise his height advantage. The fight never changed in momentum as Benn kept his pace which had Eubank Jnr. working twice as he though he would against him.
In the 6th round, Eubank Jnr. seemed to have lost his touch as Benn started closing in on him making it difficult to counter his punches, it was a very difficult situation but Eubank Jnr. found a way out when he started swinging in upper-cuts and landing some good shots.
Benn had the advantage after a head but opened the upper eye of Chris, blood started oozing and into his eye but his years of experience helped him to shield whiles Benn went asleep instead of trying to inflict more damage to the open eye.
The fight went to its length but the last round was what left spectators talking, it was a fight to take by any boxer, Eubank Jnr. and Benn stood and traded punches in the middle of the ring and on the ropes. Eubank Jnr. landed a couple of shots that stun Benn but the young warrior stood his ground and countered with his own punches.
At the end of one of the most electrifying fights, all judges scored it 116-112, 116-112, 116-112 in favour of Eubank Jnr. whose sigh of relief showed how much the win means to him while his father cheered him on.
It was rather a fight that was close to call with some of the rounds over in favour of Benn but after declaring Chris Eubank Jnr. the winner, he had this to say
“I knew I was capable of that, just needed someone to bring me out, someone to bring that out of me and I’m not going to lie I didn’t expect he would be the guy to do that. But the fact that our father’s did what they did years ago brings out a different soul, a different spirit into you and thats what we both showed here tonight.
I pushed through, there is a lot of things that is going on in my life that I’m going to get into right now, but i’m happy to have this man back with me. We’ve held up the family name like we said we were going to do. Onwards and upwards. Didn’t expect to see my father here, having my father here helped me a lot, it was one of those things that is special, he needed to be here, all of this is because of what he did and we see again baby.
Everything in this fight surprised me, I didn’t know Benn had what he had in him, i really didn’t. I thought I will break him early, I underestimated him, I didn’t train for a fight like that, I didn’t know he had it in him, he’s never shown that, but then again he’s never had to show it, he had to show it tonight so did I.”
Eubank Snr. who was proud of his son added, “My con couldn’t move around in the ring so he had to stand toe to toe and this is legendary behaviour in the ring. Conor Benn is an extraordinary fighter, he’s gotten passion somewhere but an extraordinary fighter, we all saw that here tonigh, he wanted to tear and I thought he would wear out in maybe four or five rounds, he is going strong right through the fight. I am so proud of him, that’s my son thats why I’m here, I was always going to be here.”
Conor Benn who looked disappointed but proud as the fans cheered him on added his bit, “I don’t know, maybe 40months out of the ring, without a fight, maybe inactivity but apart from that I felt it was a close fight. I’ll go watch it back, I know it was a close. He worked harder towards the end will have to watch it. But I enjoyed it. We always knew Chris was a good fighter, he always fight and talk. I believe I can fight at 160 if we don’t do the rematch which I love. Its either Eubanks or the WBC world title.”
WE will bring you more updates on what others score cards revealed, what Conor Benn’s dad saw and if there would be another electrifying rematch.
