In recent times, sports in Ghana has been centred around football and this has been a trend all sports ministers has followed. The amount of intimidation and limited or no support given to other national associations and federations have made it very difficult for some athletes to even compete in the name of the nation.
The appointment of the new sports minister, Hon. Kofi I. Adams was one that made many such associations happy following his promise of an undying commitment to ensure lesser sports get same attention as the Black Stars receive and even went on to say the trend needs to change.
In his short time in office, the minister has ensured an association has withdrawn from a competition which they qualified for and another having to seek support from a private individual. In as much as there is nothing wrong with an individual sponsoring a national association, many have quizzed who would claim the glory should the team excel in the tournament they will be participating in.
The current unsung hero who has represented the nation well is Paralympic athlete Zinabu Issah who represents Ghana in the Discuss Throwing.
Zinabu, the Ghanaian athlete won her first Godl medal in Marrakech Morocco in the Women’s F57 Discuss Throw. This is another sport that falls under the lesser sports per the criteria of the sports ministers definition.
Making a throw of 29.25m, Zinabu broke her own personal record best of 27m in Paris 2024 and 26.6 at Marrakech 2024.
The outcome of this achievement means, Zinabu goes top of the ranking in the World Para Athletics Women F57 Discuss Throw and puts her in direct qualification for WPA 2025 world championship and 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth games.
The real question is not the qualification but whether the Athletes and NPC will receive same support from the sports ministry in any form or the minister is as usual not going to be in the position to support.
