The long awaited confirmation by a top official on which sports needs all the attention in Ghana from the sports ministry has been confirmed by no other than the current sports minister, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams.
The minister whose subtle submission explained what many have been speculating has already made clear that others sports do not need much attention and that has characterised the bowing out of competitions and others having to suffer looking for sponsors because the minister assured them no promise of hope.
Hon. Adams who openly professed his undying love boxing has not publicly done any significant thing for Ghana boxing while concealing the Black Stars budget which was always made public before any activities of the team.
Snippets of an interview the minister granted has deduced that, there is no sport in Ghana other than football and not football in general but the Black Stars.
Hon. Adams who could not provide any form of assistance to the Ghana Hockey team believes Ghana needs an Olympics cycle training and the athletes shouldn’t wait to train a few month to a competition but what happens to those who have managed to qualify at the expense of the limited infrastructure and need some sort of support to push them forward?
Ghana as a country has a poor maintenance record and this goes way back. CAF in its mandate to ensure fairness had to push those in-charge to work on the national stadiums just to be partially acceptable to host any CAF competitions.
The minister realising none of Ghana’s stadia meets international standards for hosting world-class tournaments is just another addition of what has already been in existence. The current National Sports Authority boss, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah after weeks in office made the whole world understand that one of the nations stadiums is a crime scene and must be entertained for any competitions but it remains in active use.
The Hon. minister hinted that, the President of Ghana wants sports to be considered beyond just football, that is why he added ‘recreation’ to the ministry but aside football, no other sport matter to the minister and his ministry looking at his urgency in proving any form of support and the bureaucratic nature of the ministry.
The government or the ministry wanting to setup a Sports Fund is not a problem but why create loopholes where there are already manholes? “we want to run the Sports Fund better that GETFund, we want the Sports Fund to be protected, so that is won’t be controlled by the Sports Ministry.” said Hon. Adams.
The question still remains, how can you run the Sports Fund at the same time ensure it is not controlled by you? the inconsistencies in the add up makes it very hard to believe.
The government of every country has tried to ensure football and other sports get the best attention it needs to compete at the highest levels. Ghana government according to the minister is working out a model to ensure additional funds are given to GPL ‘professional’ players. In as much as it is a good initiative, would these additional funds come as a result of good sportsmanship, awards for excellence in the league or sponsorship for the league?
“We shouldn’t run sports just for the purpose of traveling” added Hon. Adams yet he assured the country that should the Black Stars win the World Cup, he will arrange first-class flights for all the players and tour every district in Ghana to celebrate.
