Professor Azumah ‘Zoom zoom’ Nelson is one Ghanaian former boxing world champion who among other ignited a passion for boxing in the entirety of Ghana. Pro. Nelson has become a household name in boxing where you can’t go into boxing history without touching on the impact he brought into the sport.
Many Ghanaians fell in love with boxing because of his passion for the sport and how proud he was to project Ghana to the world. Ghanaians literally stayed up all night waiting to watch the son of the soil battle out for glory not just for the purse but to ensure the country Ghana remains in the names of every ring he enters.
The signature son for his entrance into the ring that translates, “here comes trouble” was never lived short as he proved to be trouble for all his opponents including the fears Jeff Fenech, the Australian boxer who could not believe his eyes and had to receive a double beating.
The World Alliance Boxing Association are in talks to decide a date for Prof. Azumah Nelson, Africa’s esteemed former two-weight world champion, to be honour yet with another title the Prof. Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus, within a few days.
This announcement was made by Mitch Gilbert Woollams, the CEO of Aborigine Promotion, which is organising the inaugural WABA Championship in what was once the British colony of Gold Coast, now known as the Republic of Ghana.

Woollams is also the owner and manager of the luxurious Aborigine Beach Resort Club, located in the KETA Region, where the prestigious Supreme Championship will take place.
Prof Azumah Nelson is widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers in history from the African continent and serves as a significant inspiration within the sport of boxing.
Growing up in the capital city of Accra, Prof. Azumah Nelson discovered his boxing talent at a young age and pursued it with dedication, leading him to national recognition and participation in the All Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, in 1978.
His continental title motivated him to strive for the Commonwealth Championship, ultimately earning him a chance to compete for the WBC title, which solidified his status as a household name.
A teetotaler and an exceptional craftsman in the boxing ring, Prof. Azumah Nelson dominated the WBC’s Featherweight and Super Featherweight divisions for decades, earning his place among the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time.
Now, history is aligning with Prof. Azumah Nelson, as he is set to be honoured in a significant way. His name will be etched in golden ink in the annals of boxing history as the only living former world champion with a championship belt created and dedicated to him.
