The sports that brought lots of glory and passion to Ghanaians in the past has become a sports of mediocre where athletes can choose pushovers as opponents in a fight just to make themselves look better in the face of their supporters.

Ghana has benefited greatly from boxing and had its name written out there because of the passion and training the formers boxers put into the craft and not just the game.

Former Ghanaian world title boxer, Professor Azumah Nelson is one icon that comes to mind when everyone thinks Ghana boxing and is often considered the greatest African boxer of all time, who won multiple titles at featherweight and super featherweight. Other champions include Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joseph Agbeko, Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey (Ghana’s first female champion), Joshua Clottey, Richard Commey and many others.

Boxing in Ghana now has become a showman sport and not the sport that produced the heat and determination which tells fans how hungry their boxer is for glory. In recent times many Ghana boxers have fallen to other opponents who many assume should not be so.

Ghana has paraded a number of boxers to participate in the Riyadh Grand Prix, Saudi Arabia and the turn of events is very bad, majority of the boxers representing Ghana have suffered scores of defeats with some claiming they were robbed.

Shakul Samed was beaten, Ebenezer Tetteh got beaten, Samuel Quaye, Enoch Tetteh also received his share of the cake and Elvis Ahorgah added to the many who are making Ghana boxing sink.

It is worth noting that these fights are attended by many boxing promoters, matchmakers, sponsors, brands etc. who are there hoping to find an asset they can partner yet see many paraded boxers with no prospect of living up to their potential.

The Ghana boxing and boxers find it difficult to bring sponsors on board and this is one of the reasons. Fighting a good fighter and losing doesn’t make you weak but helps you to tune your art in the right direction.

Joshua Clottey’s advise keep echoing, “they fight pushovers and think they are the best because it is easy for them to win against those opponents. The best should fight the best to help shape each other for the chance of any world title glory. Making your fans believe you are the best doesn’t make you the best and you will always get exposed when you go to the international front.”

In the hopes of getting any world title for Ghana, boxers should backup and start competing in competitive fights than arranged show fazed fights.
