The Ghana Football Association and other stakeholders if Ghana football have had to battle the constant and persistence act of hooliganism in the various leagues. This act has been so intense that a life was lost with other vices that have caused lots of injury and damage to property.

The recent incident that took a life of a Kumasi Asante Kotoko supporter, Nana Yaw Frimpong has been updated to another which saw a supporter left in critical condition in a division league game between Attram De Visser and Hohoe United.

It is very important to note the role officiating plays in such activities which ends up in destruction of property and chaos. The division one game between Hohow United and Attram De Visser was one that had gotten many asking for improved security following the magnitude of tension surrounding the game.

The GFA and other stakeholders how need to ensure all such details are in place before the game takes shape turn a blind eye to such advice for the inevitable.

Hohoe United have been undefeated in their home ground in their past six games and weren’t ready to break their streak. Attram De Visser who visited the ground were able to win the game by a loan goal kind courtesy a penalty which many sort to be critical in such a highly profiled game.

The game ended with chaos and many supporters having to run for their lives, many injured and one seen laying on the floor while service persons on the floor look on. This is part of the measures to be put in place to ensure football is enjoyed and not just singing the slogan of ‘Bringing back the love’ which seems to matter only when the Black Stars is playing.

Another interesting incident has been sighted which could have caused worse if measures were not taken and this comes after a controversial penalty was awarded to one of the supposed big clubs in Ghana. Many would question whether such decisions are to keep the team significant or its just poor officiating?

One colleague in a conversation hinted his fear for GPL teams who would qualify to compete in the CAF champions league and CAF confederations cup as the teams competing in those tournaments are on a different pedestal.

Krobea Kumasi Asante Kotoko who place first on the Ghana premier league in their match against Bechem United has left many wondering whether our GPL referees are fit for the job or their main aim is to ensure one particular team remains significant.

Bechem United who took the lead had it cancelled with a minute of play time remaining is a cunning and controversial manner. The centre referee awarded a penalty that visibly looks very dubious but all credit to the Bechem United players who maintained their composure even after enduring such bias and cheat.

The main problem with regards to hooliganism and how officiating plays a major role in its orchestration is evidence in what happened between league leaders Kotoko and Bechem United. Many supporters on the day would start to ask questions while being provoked by opposing team supporters and the fan packed activity could soon turn to chaos.

If officiating in our leagues are not given the needed attention, these such activities will never or might be very difficult to curb. The imagination of grabbing a win in the last minutes of game only to be awarded a penalty from nothing will surely upsurge the anger of fans who probably traveled from far to come and support their teams.
